Gooseberries by Anton Chekhov

Summary

This fine Russian story was mainly about “Goodness” and “Doing Good” in life. In this story there were two friends whom had been already tired of walking in a very beautiful day when suddenly heavy rain started. Poor Ivan Ivanovitch and his friend Burkin decided to go to their friend’s, Alhin, house which was very close to them. At his house after taking a bath they started talking while the tea was being served. Ivan were talking about his younger brother, Nikolay, whom is old now, and his life till now for them. He told them that his brother had been really poor and he became rich by saving all his money even his presents and also his wife’s money. And now Nikolay had reached his goal and became the owner of a large farm. Then Ivan told them about the way that his brother behaved with his peasants and the changes of his behavior and that his brother had forgotten their previous life. Ivan told them that Nikolay just ordered his people and didn’t think of their poverty or needs and after narrating his long story asked his friends a favor and that was doing good in their life and not being selfish!

Characterization

In this story there were 5 main characters that can be analyzed:

Ivan Ivanovitch : I think he was the protagonist or central character of this story, in my opinion his characterization belongs to Dynamic category because at first he was calm and he was just a dear friend then he changed into someone who cares about others through narrating his brother’s story and their lives and needs and he understood that we as human beings have to be responsible for other people’s lives and their needs and not to be selfish.

Burkin : I think his characterization was minor or marginal because nothing special happened by him in this story and he had a static characterization too because nothing changed about him in our story!

Alhin : My opinion about him is the same as Burkin! Nothing special and additional to his characterization.

Nikolay’s wife : I think she were the Duce ex Machina of the story because Nikolay reached his goal and became rich by her death and her money. And the point is that Ivan had changed because of the result of her death so I believe that she is the Duce ex Machina of the story. And also she was one of the marginal and minor characterizations in the story.

Nikolay : I believe that Nikolay was one of the marginal and minor characterizations in the story. And he had a dynamic characterization too because at first he was poor, kind and hard working and then he became cruel and selfish and careless about others and their feelings! So because of his change I think he has a dynamic character.

Plot

On a very beautiful day Ivan and Burkin were walking along their home town since the rain started. As Alhin’s house were nearest place to their geographical place they went there. After greetings and drinking tea they talked a lot and their main subject was Ivan’s brother, Nikolay. After all it was late and they stayed over at Alhin’s house.

Theme

The theme of this story in my point of view was getting some body out of no body because from the begiing of the climax of this story to the very end Nikolay were just dreaming and trying his best to become a rich man. Another reason is that the author had repeated Nikolay’s goal and dream several times and he had mentioned even the details of his dream like a cliché.
